If you love to knit and hate to sew (like so many other knitters), you’ll agree that this is a tremendous benefit of circular knitting. Aside from seaming, however, finishing circular garments well involves exactly the same techniques as finishing flat garments: binding off, picking up stitches, and weaving in ends. Pay attention to these details, and your finishing can be as perfect as your knitting.

The best cast on to use is the Half-Hitch (see page 302) because it’s not bulky. Hold the needle so that the working yarn hangs from the left end of the needle. ë Without turning, slide the stitches to the right end of the needle and put it in your left hand. í Pull the working yarn across the back, knit across. The first stitch tends to be loose, so pull firmly on the yarn after you complete that stitch. í Pull working yarn across back, and knit first stitch. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until I-cord is the desired length.

Bring the working yarn up behind the lower needle or cable. ì ï Knit across the upper needle. The stitches will seem loose, but persevere to the end. ñ As you approach the end of this needle, hold onto the tail to keep it from unwrapping. If it gets away from you, just rewrap the yarn. ï ë í Wrap the yarn around both points, making half as many wraps as the total stitches to be cast on. For example, if you need a total of 20 stitches (10 on one side of the cast on and 10 on the other), make 10 wraps.
