At the bottom of the hill, look out for a sweet little pond to the left. Here, bear right onto a metalled drive. There follows an ascent that seems somewhat inhuman after the long descent you have just done, and it is quite a relief to swing left at the top of the hill and descend.

This is a lovely old-fashioned bookshop, with a wonderfully eclectic array of stock crammed into a very small space – the sort of bookshop from which it is a pleasure to buy a book, even if you do see the same volume sitting in the city discount bookstore two days later for a fiver less. Having left Abbey Green, continue now up the High Street, passing the splendid Natwest Bank and Italian restaurant next door in a building which dates back to 1700, and proceed to the Sue Ryder shop. This fine tile-hung building is thought to be the oldest ironmonger’s in the country, starting up here in 1680.

Its stonework of small, square knapped flints is a rarity for a church in Sussex, and its cruciform design is attributed, according to tradition, to the sight of four oxen lying down in the shape of a cross when it was being built. Up until the 1930s, shepherds would be laid to rest here with a scrap of raw wool in their hand, to inform St Peter that their poor church attendance was as a result of caring for their flocks! You may be quite reluctant to drag yourself from Alfriston to start walking, but reassure yourself that you will return to it later in the day.
