By the 1830s, however, slavery was becoming the dominant topic of the entire nation. Southerners were beginning to defend the institution with vehemence and determination, as though their very identity depended on it. Northerners were beginning to ask whether slavery was a moral stain on the nation’s bright promise that could not be tolerated, that must be cleansed. The Powells, when they were new to the country and intent on getting adjusted, paid little attention to the question of slavery. They may not even have seen many people of African descent until they got to Ohio.
