It came out around 1950, by Viking. I searched for this book for years, remembering it as "Monsters of Old La Brea," but finally found it was "Monsters of Old Los Angeles."

I think this is My Special Day, a Whitman Tell-A-Tale book from the late 60's, and the author's name was Fiedler. To make it more interesting, we introduced soft toys which requested Detective Daniel and Detective David to solve number mysteries for them. I thought "charm or "charming" might be in the title. Mine has 253 pages (if you count all the indexes), a board cover and many black and white illustrations.

Title, Maggie Muggins Every book in series ends with, "I wonder what we will do tommrow." That edition is missing many marvelous things such as the story of The Fighting Rhinoceros. ok, i found the answer to my own stumper. it was listed in your anthology section but i didn't recognize it at first because there was no identifying picture as with the other anthologies. it was Animal Stories by George Duplaix copyright 1944. most of the story titles are also rather vague in the description of the contents so i didn't really recognize anything until i reread your description and recognized the seagull and the skunk story. oddly enough, my mother gave me a box of old books of mine the other day and this one was in there. we've been reuinted!

I think his name or one of the character's names was Jud or Judson. A main part of the book has him travelling to China. Each child began with their own book and took turns reading to each other. Still, the illustrations themselves are superb, or at least the ones by Hamilton Greene are, in the first two books and apparently the last. The Grosset edition does include both The Princess and the Pea, and The Snow Queen. Counting backwards in ones, twos, fives and tens, stepping on all the numbers.

It is not a "Fun and school-adventures" book. Any thoughts on what this book is. I had this book in 1985. thanks!! Fortunately, for generations of adolescents, they share their dad's zeal for bringing criminals to justice". He bought the book _Me_ for our children, probably sometime in the mid 1960's. This is the same book as T104, which has been solved. After he died in 1919, the scientific notebooks were never found. We don't have any in stock right now, but let me know if you'd like me to look for them.

The combination of England, horses and gobstoppers strongly suggests Friday's Tunnel-- or at least another in the series of books about the Callender family, by John Verney. Anyhow - the little shop was his portal to a time long ago. I know I've seen a cover illo like this, and the ritual preparation of Aslan by Lucy (and, I think, Susan in the background) might be stumping the requester because it doesn't focus on the actual storyline.
