Linda Jaivin spoke at the 73rd lecture about the period Morrison lived in Beijing. His parents took him to see many doctors and they had many test run, but no answers were to be found for his increasingly worse condition. I label them as biographies whether or not they openly acknowledge their ghost writers or co-authors. I’m thinking of New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin’s grief memoir About Alice, which couldn’t be more than 25,000 words long; Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking (also about the loss of a spouse*); or Haruki Murakami’s What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. (*Perhaps my memoir reading is skewed in this direction for the obvious reason .) A long memoir is about 90,000 words.
